Australia's AI advantage starts in the 'missing middle'

Billions of dollars are flowing into Australia's AI infrastructure, but ResetData’s co-founder and co-CEO Marcel Zalloua believes the country's bigger AI opportunity lies in its "missing middle". These are the startups, SMEs, research organisations and universities that need access to advanced AI infrastructure but lack the capital and scale to build it themselves.

In a recent interview with InnovationAus, Marcel outlined why supporting these organisations is essential if Australia wants to move beyond hosting AI infrastructure and become a creator of AI capability, innovation and intellectual property.

Building Australian AI capability

Australia is well positioned to attract global AI investment, but infrastructure alone will not determine the country's success. To capture more of the value created by AI, Australian businesses, researchers and institutions need access to the compute, tools and platforms required to develop and scale AI locally.

The goal is not simply to host AI infrastructure, but to enable Australian organisations to create innovation, intellectual property and globally competitive AI solutions.

As demand for AI compute continues to grow, access to sovereign AI infrastructure will be critical to supporting Australia's next generation of AI innovation.

Unlocking Australia's AI opportunity

ResetData's AI-F1 sovereign AI factory was built to help address this challenge, providing Australian organisations with access to advanced AI compute while keeping data and intellectual property on Australian soil.

ResetData is in discussions with governments about reserving sovereign AI compute capacity for Australian organisations. Marcel believes this will be critical to ensuring startups, researchers and government agencies can continue to innovate as global demand for AI capacity increases.

For Marcel, Australia's success should ultimately be measured by how effectively it enables the missing middle to innovate, compete globally and create lasting economic value.
